J. J. Abrams Didn’t Want 'Star Trek 2' To Go 3D

J. J. Abrams Didn’t Want “Star Trek 2” To Go 3D

As we’ve mentioned before, we really aren’t fans of the recent trend toward 3D movies. It just seems like the latest gimmick to get people in the theaters, and often times straight up obtrusive. So when we heard the rumors that Star Trek 2 was probably going to be in 3D we weren’t thrilled. However, this new report of J. J. Abrams’s own apprehension and subsequent acceptance has us feeling a wee bit better about the prospect. At least it sounds like the movie may be offered in both 3D and 2D, but no mention if that option will be available in theaters or just on Blu-ray.

Three New Faces Are Added To The ‘Star Trek 2’ Roster

Three more actors have been slated to join the cast of J.J. Abrams’s next Star Trek movie. Benedict Cumberbatch (War Horse), Naaneen Contractor (24) and Noel Clarke (Doctor Who) were all announced earlier this week but their characters’ roles are still technically a mystery.

Benedict Cumberbatch, the British actor most recently seen in "War Horse" and "Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy," will play the main villain in the "Star Trek" sequel. This was the role for which Abrams originally wanted Benicio Del Toro, but had Édgar Ramirez circling once Del Toro was out of the picture, Variety reported.

"Damon, Bob and Alex.. wrote the most amazing script," Says J.J. About Star Trek 2

So, shooting for Star Trek XII (or Star Trek 2 as the kids on the interwebs are calling it) is set to begin next month. J.J. tells MTV News that the sets are almost complete and that "Damon, Bob and Alex — they wrote the most amazing script, and I'm thrilled to get a chance to direct it. It's totally mine to screw up, so if you don't like it, it's completely on me." We dig J.J's self effacing humor. One thing that were not so keen on is post-production 3D. Everyone has heard that "2" will be 3D, but from what J.J. has mentioned, it won't be shot in 3D.

"We're shooting on film, 2-D, and then we'll do a good high-end conversion like the 'Harry Potter' movie and all that. Luckily, with our release date now we have the months needed to do it right because if you rush it, it never looks good."

Benecio's Out, But The Rumor Mill Spins. My Question; Why Khan In Star Trek XII?

Benecio's Out, But The Rumor Mill Spins. My Question; Why Khan In Star Trek XII?

So, by now you've all heard the rumors about Benecio Del Toro's quick rise and fall as a possible substitute for Ricardo Montalban's Khan. Now it seems that there are two more possibilities for an alternate universe super human with superior intellect. According to Variety (via Conventry Telegraph), Edgar Ramirez (The Bourne Ultimatum, Vantage Point, Carlos the Jackal miniseries, upcoming Wrath of the Titans) and Jordi Molla (Bad Boys II, Elizabeth: The Golden Age, Knight and Day) might be up for the job.

Ok, so Peter Weller has already battled Lectroids from the 8th dimension (Planet 10, for you sticklers) and cleaned up the (future) streets of Detroit, making his adventuring days behind him, right? Not so! He has been announced the latest addition to the J.J. Abrams cast of Star Trek XII.

Variety has been kind enough to give all us hungry fans the poop.

J.J. Abrams has tapped veteran thesp Peter Weller for the ensemble cast of Paramount's upcoming "Star Trek" sequel.

Specifics of Weller's role are under wraps. His selection came on the heels of Abrams choosing Alice Eve as a character that's believed to be new.

J.J. Abrams Is "Focused" On Star Trek XII, But We May Not See It Until 2013

J.J. Abrams Is "Focused" On Star Trek XII, But We May Not See It Until 2013

We've been a bit hesitant to post news about the upcoming sequel to J.J. Abrams's Star Trek simply because there's been a real lack of it. Sure, we've seen that Zachary Quinto is shifting into gear for his return as Spock and that Anton Yeltchin is excited about returning to his role as Chekov. Oh, and the news of Benicio Del Toro being courted for a possible villain role (more on that in a few days) but not much real news is being shared about Star Trek XII. I did find something today that I found at least somewhat newsworthy, it seems that the next installment of the J.J.verse is being pushed back from it's June 29th, 2012 release date to sometime in 2013.
